Jaroslav Šilhavý will most likely continue with the national team. What did he say on Tuesday about his future and the future of his staff?
Šilhavý has been coaching the national team since September 2018, when he replaced Karel Jarolim, who failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. And it should be noted that the Czechs have come a long way in the past three years.
Firstly, the national team did their duty and qualified for Euro 2020 from the second place in the group with England, Bulgaria, Kosovo and Montenegro. In Eden, they even managed to beat Albion 2-1 thanks to goals from Jakub Brabec and Zdeněk Ondrášek.
“I am proud to hold such a position and I don’t want to run away from it. Ifnothing happens and we agree on a contract, I will be happy to continue coaching the national team,” Šilhavy told ČT Sport.
The story of the Czech national team is not over with the qualification for the tournament. Patrik Schick and co. scored four points in the group with England, Croatia and Scotland, and sensationally knocked out the Dutch in the quarter-finals after a 2-0 win.
They were stopped by the Danes, the biggest surprise of the championship. Nevertheless, advancing to the quarter-finals of the European Championship can be considered a great success, which is also realized by the management of the national team, who offered Šilhavy a new contract until the next European tournament.
“We talked (with chairman Fousek) about a two-year cycle – for the European Championship. I think there is a consensus. Theexecutive committee decided today and tomorrow or in the next few days we should have another meeting to discuss it,” continued the holder of championship titles with Slavia and Liberec.
After the Euro, the national team fought valiantly in the World Cup qualifiers in Qatar, with the barrage finally securing them first place in their Nations League group. In the semi-finals of the play-offs, the Czechs faced the Swedes, bravely resisting them until extra time, when a single goal by the northerners decided their progress.
It was after the end of the barrage and several controversial coaching staff changes that the most speculation about a change of coach arose. However, it seems that nothing will change, Šilhavy’s assistants should also continue.
“I waited until it was very clear how things were going and that I had confidence. If it works out with the extension, I will talk to the guys from the implementation team. I don’t think there should be any significant changes,” Šilhavy said.
