Mikaela Shiffrin has had one of the worst falls of her career. During Friday’s downhill in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy , she ended up in the safety nets after losing control of her skis.
The accident occurred when she landed in a jump on soft snow at the top of the famous Olympia delle Tofane course. After the fall, Schiffrin was immediately taken to hospital with a suspected injury to her left leg.
“Mikaela was taken by ambulance to the clinic in Cortina to be examined for an injury to her left leg. According to the initial analysis, it seems that the cruciate ligaments remained intact. Details will be announced soon,” Shiffrin’s team said in a statement.
Schiffrin herself then left a message for fans on social network X. “Thank you all for your support and best wishes. I’m taking it one day at a time at the moment and will share an update as soon as I know more. I’m very grateful that it’s not worse, but I’m in a lot of pain right now,” said the 28-year-old skier from Colorado.
She also confirmed in a statement that she will miss the next World Cup stop in Kronplatz, South Tyrol. Whether Schiffrin will resume her season will be decided in the coming days.
“Anything else is hard to say right now. We need to work it out with my team and see how I feel in the next few days,” said the record holder of 95 World Cup wins.
Both Shiffrin and Vlhova are dealing with injuries
Shiffrin isn’t the only star skier who has had to deal with the aftermath of a horrific fall in recent days. Three other World Cup winners have also had serious accidents in the last two weeks.
During a downhill in Wengen, Switzerland, Norway’s Aleksander Aamodt Kilde fell dangerously just before the finish line. The two-time Crystal Globe winner and Shiffrin’s partner, among others, was taken to hospital by helicopter with an open fracture of his tibia.
Just a day earlier, French all-rounder Alexis Pinturault was also seriously injured on the same course. He tore ligaments in his knee during a rough fall in the super-G.
Then last week, during the World Cup in Jasná, Slovakia, local star Petra Vlhová crashed. The Olympic champion suffered ligament damage in her right knee and will not return to the slopes this season.
