Andrei Shevchenko is one of the most successful athletes ever born on the territory of Ukraine. But the challenges he now faces are far greater than any football match he has ever appeared in.

The Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory has been going on for almost a month

It will have been a month since Russian troops invaded Ukrainian territory and it still doesn’t look like the war is over. More than 10 million Ukrainians have lost their shelter during the bombing of Ukrainian cities, and another 3 million have fled the country for fear of their safety.

At the beginning of the conflict, we informed you that former AC Milan and Ukrainian national team legend Andriy Shevchenko called for solidarity with Ukrainians. In the midst of the ongoing conflict with Russia, Shevchenko is determined to help his country’s people flee the combat zones and find safe haven.

A shocked Shevchenko praises President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people

In an interview with Jamie Redknapp, Shevchenko recalled the moment his mother informed him of the start of the war. “I was asleep when my mother called me with the news,” the former Ballon d’Or winner told the Daily Mail. “We couldn’t believe that Russia was going to start a war, we were in shock, ” he said of the night he learned of the Russian invasion of his home country.

Shevchenko went on in the interview to praise the personality of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “The position of President Volodymyr Zelensky was very important,” Shevchenko said. “He could have given up, but he sent a clear message that he will stay and that we must defend our country,” he praised the attitude of his president. “This has united the Ukrainian people and when you see people on the street going without weapons to stop a Russian tank, it is so powerful,” he affirmed the determination of the Ukrainian people.

The father-of-four is particularly saddened by the killing of innocent children, calling President Putin a “thing.”

Shevchenko, who is married to American model Kristen Pazik, is a proud father. “I am the father of four children, you are the father of three children, Jamie,” he continued in a sad interview with Jamie Redknapp, the former Liverpool FC legend. “Innocent children are dying for no reason, that’s why I want to stop this war,” he stressed the danger Ukrainian children are in.

Although Russian athletes have nothing to do with the conflict, Shevchenko supported the controversial decision to ban players and teams from competing in sports competitions. “I completely agree with the exclusion of Russian athletes from competitions, because the war is not over,” Shevchenko said. “We have to put pressure on the president of Russia, I don’t even want to say what the name of the ‘thing’ is,” he explained his indignation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
