Shearer: 5 players should be guaranteed a EURO nomination
Alan Shearer, still the best Premier League goalscorer in history, has spoken out about which players Gareth Southgate shouldn’t leave out of the squad for the upcoming Euros. Neither name will surprise any football fan. The coach of the English national team did not learn much new.
Alan Shearer, still the best Premier League goalscorer in history, has spoken out about which players Gareth Southgate shouldn’t leave out of the squad for the upcoming Euros. Neither name will surprise any football fan. The coach of the English national team did not learn much new.
Shearer on the nomination
“Five positions out of the attacking six are filled. Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Harry Kane, not one of them must be missing from the nomination or the starting line-up. All have had outstanding performances. However, one place is still vacant.” Shearer thus pointed to the current best-performing English players in the top-flight competitions.
“But there is another option. Put Ollie Watkins at the top and Harry Kane in the number ten spot. However, I don’t think Gareth would do it that way, but sometimes it might be appropriate,” the former cannonballer further stated. However, in this line-up, Declan Rice would be out of midfield to defend on his own, which could lead to numerous threats from the opposition.
“Kane and Watkins have never played together in the national team, it would be the first time. But Watkins is the best player in the Premier League this season,” Shearer concluded his monologue. During the interview, he also said that Bellingham could play deeper in the midfield to give Kane and Watkins more space.
The form of the aforementioned players
Jude Bellingham leaves not a single Real Madrid fan in doubt about his price tag. 20 goals and 9 assists in the 31 games the Englishman has intervened in. On the pitch, he acts as a leader, sometimes you wonder as if he has been in the White Ballet’s cabin for several years.
Bukayo Saka is having another great season in Arsenal colours. In 35 games played, the English winger has registered 16 goals and 15 assists. He could be a mainstay at the European Championships.
Phil Foden is probably having the season of his life. The Englishman has played in 40 games and has 18 goals and 10 assists so far. Thanks to him, the absence of cannonballer Erling Haaland has not affected the team. In the last league game he blew Manchester United’s hopes away with 2 goals.
Harry Kane is a chapter in his own right. 33 games, 33 goals and 9 assists. Another amazing season for the English striker. The only drawback continues to be trophies, he is unlikely to break his curse this season.
Ollie Watkins is having a fantastic season, with 16+10 (goals + assists) to his name in the Premier League alone. In total, the Englishman has notched 21 goals and 10 assists in the 38 games he has featured in.
Who is Southgate unlikely to miss out on?
Jordan Pickford is expected to be the number one goalkeeper once again. The English goalkeeper is keeping Everton’s hopes of staying in the Premier League alive thanks to his performances. In the past he has had his place in the national team despite a better catching Aaron Ramsdale, but this year he has no competition.
Although Harry Maguire is not playing rather than playing, he will still have his place in the team. Gareth Southgate has suffered at Maguire’s hands and had his place even though he didn’t play at the club at all. It is in defence that there are big question marks as the starting line-ups of England’s top clubs are mostly made up of foreigners.
