The Swiss international will move to the United States, where he has signed with the Chicago Fire. His departure from French side Lyon comes after just six months in their colours.
The former Liverpool or Bayern Munich midfielder celebrated his 30th birthday last year. He is still a full member of the Swiss national team, for which he has played over 100 games so far and has become the team captain. During the autumn part of the season he played 11 games in the French league, scoring 2 goals.
Some critics and fans have criticized the transfer because they feel that Shaqiri left Europe too soon for a new deal in MLS. Despite this, the club proudly showcased their new addition on their social media.
The transfer is a big deal for the Chicago Fire. Shaqiri has become the most expensive signing in the club’s history. Chicago sent 6 million euros to Lyon for him. This is a very good deal for Lyon. The French club bought him from Liverpool for a million euros less.
” We are delighted to formally welcome Xherdan Shaqiri to the club. Xherdan can change the course of a game and he is a player who will entertain our fans and the people of Chicago.”
Chicago also released an original video to accompany the transfer.
Shaqiri is expected to wear a Chicago jersey until 2024, but the question is what will happen between now and then. The Illinois team has missed the MLS Cup playoffs for four consecutive years. After the club owner’s investment, the team built on the Swiss legend will want to return to the top again.
