Manchester United welcomed the famous Bayern Munich to Old Trafford on Tuesday night. To continue in the European Cups in the spring, they needed to win. It didn’t. The Red Devils have two negative records. The much-criticised coach, Erik ten Hag, is still talking about a good performance.

Erik ten Hag is under pressure again. Just when it looked like better times might be on the horizon after Manchester United won all their league games in November and the Dutch coach was voted the Premier League’s best coach of the month, now it is the other way around again.

For as well as November went, December is not going well at all. With the exception of the duel with Chelsea, which the Red Devils won, they failed to keep up with Newcastle, Bournemouth and now Bayern Munich. Their last two games were played at Old Trafford and they lost 3-0 to Bournemouth.

Bayern didn’t score any more goals, but they did their duty. He controlled the game. They won comfortably 1-0. He allowed his opponents to do basically nothing. Copenhagen were the only team in the group to take points off the Bavarian big club.

It is the Danish side that is advancing to the Champions League from second place in the spring phase. Turkish side Galatasaray dropped from third place to the Europa League, while Manchester United finished in last place, having won just one of their six matches and lost four times.

Manchester United hold two negative records

As already mentioned, Bayern managed to overcome Manchester United without much difficulty. The English club did not create any chances at all and had only one shot on target. Thus, they reaped criticism for their performance in a situation when it was necessary to win to continue in Europe in the spring.

To make matters worse, the Red Devils set two unwanted records. Firstly, they received 15 goals in the group stage, the most ever scored by any Premier League side in the Champions League group stage.

Apart from that, Manchester United are the last team in their Champions League group for the second time. This was achieved in the 2005/06 season. According to the statistics website Squawka, the Red Devils are the first English team to fail twice in their group.

“We made mistakes. But otherwise our performance was very good. We didn’t deserve to lose, yet we lost. In the end, it just wasn’t good enough,” said coach ten Hag, according to Fabrizio Romano.
