Lazio Rome were scheduled to play the second leg of the Europa League group stage against Midtjylland on Thursday 15 September. However, the club from the Italian capital did not play the game to their liking, losing 1:5 to the Danish side.
The Romans entered the match with Midtjylland actively, but after the first few minutes it was the Danish side that was more likely to get the better of them.
In the 26th minute, both teams threw away very solid scoring chances. Firstly, after a cross from the side, Pedro found himself in a good position, but he punishingly shot over the bar. And only a few moments later, Gustav Isaksen, the home player, also hit the crossbar.
But then Paulinho found the ball and sent Midtjylland into the lead. Alberto Capellas’ charges added another goal four minutes later when Sory Kaba was the scorer, firing from inside the sixteen yard box towards the right post.
The home side continued to be the more dangerous team until the end of the first half, with the opening of the second half, specifically the 52nd minute, bringing further disaster. A clear foul was committed by Danilo Cataldi in the penalty area and Evander made no mistake from the penalty spot – 3: 0.
At least Lazio reduced the score five minutes later when Sergej Milinkovic-Savic fired from the edge of the penalty area. Midtjylland could have added another goal in the 67th minute when Evander kicked another penalty after a foul by Adam Marusic, but this time he did not convert. It was Isaksen who scored the follow-up to make it 4-1.
When Erik Sviatchenko added a fifth goal in the 72nd minute after a beautiful pass from Evander, it was clear to everyone that this would be an embarrassment of the highest order. Last year’s fifth-placed team in Serie A got the boot from the second team in the Danish competition.
And Midtjylland had recorded only one point in the three previous matches in the domestic competition for an away draw with Nordsjaelland. Before that, they lost to Aalborg and Sturm Graz. Lazio, on the other hand, were in decent form, beating Verona 2-0 and beating Feyenoord 4-2 in their opening Group F match.
In any case, there were 225 supporters of the Roman club in the stadium, who must have been shocked to see the disgraceful performance of their players. So it is logical that Lazio’s management decided to refund the faithful fans’ admission fees.
However, due to this defeat Lazio dropped to third place in the Group F table, with all teams currently on the same number of points (3). The Romans have two Italian Serie A matches coming up in the near future. On Sunday, 18 September, they will take on newcomer Cremonese, and on 2 October they will challenge Spezia at home.
