Sevilla have had a turbulent season. It struggled in the relegation battle in the autumn, had no chance of progressing from the group stage in the Champions League and fell from third place to the Europa League.
But even in the spring, the worries about relegation battles didn’t stop, and so after Julen Lopetegui was sacked, so was his successor – Jorge Sampaoli. José Luis Mendilibar came on the bench and finally lifted the team.
Since his arrival, Sevilla have won more points than three quarters of the teams in La Liga, pulled the Andalusian out of the relegation fight and won the Europa League to boot. The first full season under Mendilibar thus follows an interesting spectacle.
However, another traditional team, Valencia, is doing very badly. Last season, it recorded its worst league result in the 21st century, both in terms of points (42) and position (16th place).
Fans continue to protest against owner Peter Lima, who refuses to sell the club and has not brought in any big signings. At the end of the season, the team improved a little under coach Rubén Barajá, but will it be enough for the new season?
Moreover, Sevilla can take on Valencia. It hasn’t lost to the Bats for nine games in a row, winning six of them and drawing three.
At the start of the new season, Sevilla will want to show that they will once again be among the elite and fight for the cup places. That’s why they should come out hard and score in their first home game.
