One of the blackest seasons in recent years has been experienced by Sevilla in Spain. In recent seasons, the team from the top of the table has been playing for salvation and experiencing a huge crisis. The management has fired its second coach in one season.
The 2022/23 season started with Julen Lopetegui on the bench, who was very popular among the fans. He won the Europa League, turned Sevilla into a running machine that could compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona.
But the management sold his two key stoppers Jules Koundé and Diego Carlos in the summer and brought in no replacements. Thus began the disaster, Sevilla didn’t catch the start of the season and everything was falling apart.
The popular coach Lopetegui was fired despite his previous successes and replaced by Jorge Sampaoli, who had already worked in the south of Spain.
But even this “ras” as Sampaoli is known for his methods did not wake up the Sevilla players. After 26 rounds, the proud Andalusian club is in 14th place in the table and, what’s worse, only two points behind penultimate Almería.
So after the weekend defeat to Getafe, the management decided to sack Sampaoli as well.
“After the defeat to Getafe, which sent the team back to the relegation zone, FC Sevilla has terminated the contract of coach Jorge Sampaoli. The club’s decision was prompted by the fact that the team has failed to climb out of the bottom rungs of the table since he took over as coach, and by the performance offered by the team’s recent matches,” Sevilla said in a statement.
Sevilla has already secured a replacement, José Luis Mendilibar. He will be tasked with rescuing Sevilla and ideally surprising them in the Europa League, where the Andalusians will challenge Manchester United in the quarter-finals.
