Sevilla lost 0:2 to Bilbao in the 19th round of La Liga in front of their home fans and are now just one point above the relegation zone. The game was also watched by the new president Jose Maria de Nido Carrasco. Bilbao, on the other hand, jumped up to third place in the table, at least for a while, ahead of Atlético Madrid and Barcelona.

Sevilla did not please the new president

There was a big change in Sevilla over the Christmas holidays. The club’s president Jose Castro Carmona, who was on the board during the years when Sevilla won the Europa League, quit. Jose Maria de Nido Carrasco took over after his departure.

The interesting thing about all of this was that Carmona quit for no reason and his replacement is the son of the ex-president who headed the club just before Carmona.

However, even the change in high position did not kick Sevilla into gear. The team is in 16th place with just 16 points, holding only a one-point lead on the relegation zone. The 0:2 defeat to Bilbao did not improve the situation at all.

Even before Christmas, there was a change in the coaching position, with Quique Sanchez Flores taking the reins of the team. However, even he has not found the right recipe for success, so it is not certain how long this strategist will remain in the role of the team manager if the results do not improve.

Bilbao has followed up on a good performance

Bilbao’s players have put in fantastic performances this season and the win over Sevilla only confirmed that. Moreover, they jumped from fifth place to third place after a 2-0 win.

At least for a while they are ahead of Barcelona, who are yet to play a match in the 19th round of La Liga. However, yesterday’s loss to Atlético Madrid contributed to Bilbao being no worse than fourth in the league after the full round.

Moreover, Athletic extended their impressive run of games without a loss. The win over Sevilla was the 11th game in a row that Bilbao has not met an opponent.

Mikel Vesga opened the scoring. The match was very important for defender Aitor Paredes, who increased the score to 2-0 in the 76th minute. It was the first time in his career that the Bilbao graduate scored in his jersey.
