Red Bull has officially confirmed the line-up for next year. Alongside Verstappen, Sergio Pérez will race for the team. Albon has lost his place on the grid for next year after a disappointing season.

“To have the opportunity to race for a title contending team is something I’ve dreamed of since the very beginning,” Pérez said after the news was announced on Friday afternoon. The 30-year-old has signed a one-year contract with Red Bull.

Sergio Pérez’s Formula 1 career was already looking pretty bleak. In September, he was informed by his team that he would not be joining them for the next season. His place at Racing Point, which will race under the Aston Martin brand, will be taken by Sebastian Vettel.

Ironically, Pérez regularly scored more points in races than his teammate Stroll. He even crowned his most successful season of his career with victory in the Sakhir Grand Prix. But the seats for next season were filling up fast. Red Bull was the Mexican star’s last chance.

He was only assured of Max Verstappen for next season. Alex Albon in the other car was well behind expectations. The team waited until the last minute to see what the 24-year-old would do. But even a good last weekend in Abu Dhabi couldn’t save him. The final seventh place and 105 points were not enough for the ambitious team.

Like Gasly before him, Albon was unable to succeed alongside Verstappen. For next year, he will serve as a reserve and test driver for Red Bull. “Alex remains an important part of the team. We thank him very much for his hard work,” said team boss Horner.
