Sergio Agüero says goodbye, announcing the end of his career at today’s press conference. The reason for his early exit is persistent heart problems that have prevented him from continuing. A player with a god-given talent, who had to fight various health complications throughout his career and thus could not end his footballing story with a happy ending, capped off his eventful career. What is his life journey and at which club did he achieve the greatest success?
CA Independiente
He showed his quality at a very young age. At just 15 years old he signed his first contract with Independiente (the leading team in the Argentine top flight). Aguero spent 3 seasons there, fully developed his talent and was already highly productive. He scored 23 goals in 54 games and was ready for a big transfer to Europe.
Atlético Madrid
Several big European clubs were interested in his services, but he was eventually snapped up by Atlético Madrid. For Aguero, too, the move was absolutely the right one. By transferring to the Spanish league, he didn’t have to deal with any language barrier, so the subsequent adjustment to a new country or a new competition didn’t take too long. Moreover, Atlético was a hotbed of promising strikers (Torres, Costa) during this period.
This engagement was also very successful for Aguero. He made his way into the starting line-up very early on and immediately started to score one goal after another. He spent 5 great years at the club. He developed into a great finisher and fulfilled his potential perfectly. He scored a total of 100 goals in 230 games, helped the team win the Europa League (2009/10) and the European Super Cup (2010). Interestingly, he had almost no health complications during this engagement.
Manchester City
In 2011, he made another step up, moving to Manchester City for €40 million. He was one of the first big reinforcements after the arrival of the new owner (Sheikh Mansour, one of the richest people in the world, became the owner of the club). After his arrival, the Citizens brought in a few more quality players and the most successful era in the club’s history could have begun.
It is 2011/12 and the battle for the title between Manchester United and Manchester City is coming to a head. The league champion will be decided in the last round. The score between Manchester City and QPR is 2-2, the match is about to end. The Citizens must win to claim their first title since 1968, otherwise the more famous United will take it. Aguero scores the winning goal in the 94th minute to secure his club’s historic title, becoming a club legend. An absolutely unforgettable moment that will forever be etched in the memory of all Premier League fans.
The club’s other successes were not long in coming. He helped the club to win 5 league titles and 7 English Cup triumphs. His individual statistics are absolutely stunning. He scored 184 goals in 275 games, rising to 4th place in the historical goalscorers table. It was within his capabilities to attack even the leader Shearer, but numerous injuries prevented him from doing so.
Aguero has been absolutely instrumental in most of the club’s successes. He became the best player in the club’s history. In his peak form, he was the best striker in the Premier League and one of the best strikers in the world. He had a great eye for goal, great choice of position and great productivity.
Unfortunately, he was very unlucky with injuries (he had a total of 31 different health complications during his involvement with the Citizens). These prevented him from becoming even more of a football legend than he actually was. In recent years, he has virtually stopped playing due to injury. After winning his 5th league title in the 2020/21 season, he ended his illustrious involvement with Manchester City and joined Spanish side Barcelona as a free agent.
FC Barcelona
His last career engagement unfortunately lasted only a few months. It is a very sad end to his rich career. At the beginning of this engagement he injured his calf, which sidelined him for 9 matches. On his return he played 5 games, scoring only one goal. But then it turned out that he had a heart problem that sent him back to the sideline. These problems were eventually so severe that he was forced to end his successful career. Farewell to a Manchester City club legend and historically one of the best Premier League strikers to ever play in the competition.
Argentina
In Aguero’s case, his national team history should not be overlooked. He has scored 42 goals in 101 games. In 2008, he won the Olympic tournament in Beijing, China. Alongside Lionel Messi, he won silver at the 2014 World Cup. At the end of his career, he won the South American Copa America in 2021.
