Last year, European football union UEFA decided to organise a new format called Finalissima, pitting the winners of the EURA and South American Copa América against each other.
The European championship was won by the Italians last July after the English defeated them on penalties. And the South American tournament was dominated by Argentina, who beat rivals Brazil in the final with a single goal from Ángel di María.
Yesterday, the historic opening match was played on neutral ground at Wembley and the duel was clearly dominated by Argentina. Lionel Messi, in particular, was the central figure of the match, crowning his spectacular performance with two assists.
In the first half, Argentina took a two-goal lead after goals from Lautaro Martinez and Ángel di María. In the second half, Italian goalkeeper Donnaruma then worked his magic on the South Americans’ other chances, but then fell short of Dybala’s goal late in the game.
Argentina extended their unbeaten streak to an incredible 32 matches and their captain led them to another title in one year. In addition, his performance must have lifted many a Paris Saint-Germain fan out of his chair, because in addition to two assists, he showed incredible vision on the ball and great dribbling.
After all, you can watch his breathtaking performance, which earned him the man of the match award, in the video below. The “good old boy” returns Messi?
