Euro 2020 will begin on Friday, with the Czech national team starting its journey through the group on Monday at 15:00 against Scotland. What does Petr Čech think about the tournament? He fears Scottish revenge for ‘racism’ Ondrej Kudela against Scottish Rangers player Glen Kamara?

The Euros are unusually being played in eleven cities in eleven different countries this year. Players have to fly long distances to their matches and at the same time the tournament loses the good atmosphere not only in the stadiums but also in the streets. Many fans are selling their tickets, as the games are also being played in countries where it is impossible to stay near the stadium due to pandemic measures.

“Speaking for myself, I have to say that I don’t like the whole format of the EURO without pandemics. TheEURO and its charm was that the tournament was held in one, at most two countries that are next to each other,” he said in an interview with iSport.

Czech fans were quite optimistic before the EURO. In their eyes, the selection for the big tournament was the strongest in the last ten years. However, the first preparatory match already changed many opinions. The 0:4 loss to Italy after a terrible performance brought an avalanche of criticism on all players, especially on the stoppers Ondrej Čelůstka and Jakub Brabec.

“I wouldn’t look too much at the results in the preparation, it will be different at the tournament. The favourites will still be the same. France, England, Italy and Germany,” he added.

The Czech sees an advantage in Jaroslav Šilhavy’s selection in that he will go into at least two matches as an outsider. This position suits the Czechs, in the recent past they have won against England or won a valuable draw with Belgium. They even outplayed Belgium in most of the game and a point was disappointing in the final.

“The Czechs have two teams in the group that can go far, they have a tough job ahead of them. The advantage may be that they don’t go into any match as favourites. In the last few games they have tested that England is a team to play with, they managed to beat them in Prague.”

In addition to the five Slávists, three Spartans will also be wearing the Czech jersey at the Euros. One of them is eighteen-year-old talent Adam Hložek, who has become the league’s top scorer and scored an incredible seven goals in the last month. The Czech thinks he can emulate Milan Baros, who started as a substitute in 2004 and eventually became the tournament’s top scorer.

“You can’t help but notice a player who at his age belongs to Sparta’s squad and is scoring well in the domestic league. His efficiency is relatively high, which is not guaranteed at such a young age. At the EURO he can follow Milan Baros in that he could become a goal scorer.”

At the start of the championship, Hložek and his team will face Scotland, the weakest team in the group. The game will be played in Glassgow, so the question is whether Scottish fans or even players will retaliate for Ondrej Kudela’s alleged racism.

“The fact that it happened in the Slavia v Rangers game only affects their fans. I don’t think the Europa League match scandal should in any way affect the national team matches,” Čech concluded,
