Leverkusen are struggling from the start of the season, going into the match in Belgium with a record of five losses from their first six games. They were more active at the start, but they were wasting their chances. In the 20th minute, Patrik Schick headed wide.
On the other hand, the home side took their first big chance. Stoker Loubadhe Abakar Sylla pounced on a centre from a corner and headed the ball into the net. Bayer’s goalkeeper had a big hand in it, as he caught his shot but the ball fell over the goal line.
The Czechs were in charge in the second half. Leverkusen dominated and went for the equaliser, but it didn’t happen. Adam Hložek made his Champions League debut in the 67th minute, replacing full-back Mitchel Bakker.
Five minutes later, Schick scored. Odoie placed Callum Hodson’s centre with a light touch to the back post, but VAR subsequently found Jonathan Tah, who was involved in a duel in the whitewash, narrowly offside.
It wasn’t Schick’s last scoring moment. A few minutes later, he scissor-kicked another centre from the left and was lucky to get the ball into the net. This time he didn’t even celebrate the goal, he knew he was a metre offside at the time of the shot.
Hložek could have opened his scoring account in the millionaire’s competition in the setup, from a direct kick he aimed exactly at the left post, but Simon Mignolet saved it. Bayer thus dropped an important three points at the start of the competition.
