Patrik Schick is having an absolutely fantastic season. He is scoring goal after goal in Leverkusen and is almost unstoppable. Moreover, he is close to rewriting Czech football history, one goal away from breaking a major record.
Last season Patrik Schick was just getting his feet wet at Leverkusen, but in the current one he has literally exploded with goals. He is currently the second top scorer in the Bundesliga, with a sensational 16 goals in 13 games.
He has already broken several club records. He became the first player in Leverkusen’s history to score four goals in one game. Besides, nobody in the club’s history had scored so many goals after the first half of the season.
But now he is very close to breaking the record, which is purely Czech. With two goals in Wednesday’s game against Hoffenheim, he matched the best seasons of Jan Koller and Pavel Kuka in the top five European leagues.
None of our footballers have ever managed to surpass the mark of 16 league goals in one season in one of the top five European leagues.
Koller scored 16 goals for Dortmund in the 2003/04 season, Kuka scored 16 goals for Kaiserslautern in the 1994/95 season.
It is already certain that Schick will not only break the record, but also move it forward significantly. It is only a question of when. He may succeed in pushing it so far that it may never be surpassed again.
Will he do it on Sunday against Freiburg?
