The Czech national team failed to beat the favoured England and lost their last group match 0:1. Thanks to this, the Czech Republic dropped in the table and advanced from 3rd place. This means that they will face a very tough opponent in the eighth round. Who exactly that will be will be decided in the final matches of the group stage. The Czech team played a very even match with England. However, the team lacked more creativity to surprise the favourites. Soucek and co. simply did not impress and deservedly lost. Who disappointed? Which player fell short of expectations?
Tomas Vaclik – 6
In the beginning of the match he made a bad run against the escaping Sterling, but fortunately he only hit the bar. The Czech goalkeeper could have been more decisive and covered this chance better.
Vaclik also had some bright moments. He made a great save to keep out Kane, and he covered a long-range shot well. Otherwise, he played quite solidly and was one of the better players.
Vladimír Coufal – 6
Again he had 1 weaker moment in the match. Couldn’t stop Grealish’s centre, from which the winning goal fell. Otherwise, he did well again. He was active, energetic, tried to support the offense a lot.
His asset is his steady performance, which he proved once again. The team can rely on him and that’s a big plus. He is one of the best Czech players of the tournament.
Ondřej Čelůstka – 6
Both stoppers played their best from the defense. Čelůstka didn’t panic, won header duels, defended the active Kane well. Only the passing was not good again. His performance is up and it’s not as bad as it looked before the tournament started.
Tomas Kalas – 7
Just like Celestka, he deserves praise. He handled England’s dangerous attack quite well. Flawless in the air. Didn’t make any visible mistake.
Met his form at the tournament and is a mainstay in the team. If his tackling had been better, his performance would have been rated even better.
Jan Bořil – 3
Worst player of the match. Everything he touched, he messed up. Couldn’t keep an eye on the diminutive Sterling who scored an all too easy goal. Very shaky defensively overall. Plus, he’s been gutted and won’t be available for the eighth round. Which is bad news considering Kadeřábek’s lack of play.
In the second half, he fouled his opponent unnecessarily during a defensive corner. Fortunately, the referee missed the penalty. He played his worst game of the tournament and overall his performance is very disappointing.
Tomas Soucek – 6
Along with the stoppers, he was one of the best players of the team. However, he was not ideal either. He was inaccurate, uncreative and the team’s distribution was pretty shaky. It was better defensively.
He also created 2 big chances. But the first shot was blocked by Stones. On the second big chance, he missed again. Soucek played better for the Czech national team.
Tomas Holeš – 5
He didn’t follow up his good debut. Inaccurate, late to reach the opponent. Didn’t help the team much defensively either. His only bright spot was a great shot from distance. But Pickford, the goalkeeper, blocked it. Holeš didn’t pull off a mediocre performance either.
Vladimir Darida – 4
Darida’s performance at the Euro is truly appalling. You would expect something better from the captain than what he is currently showing. You have to admit that Darida is playing out of position and it shows. He really isn’t a creative midfielder and he clearly proves it.
So here I would blame the coaching staff more for not being able to find him an ideal spot in the lineup. Unfortunately, the whole team is paying the price and it’s a big problem on offense. It turns out that not nominating Bořek Dočkal was a huge mistake. And quite possibly it will cost the Czechs a better place in the tournament.
Lukáš Masopust – 4
Invisible against England. Defensively, he had a couple of unnecessary turnovers that created chances for his opponent. In attack, invisible. The performances of both wingers are a huge disappointment and Schick is paying the price. Up front, he is simply useless in this tournament.
Jakub Jankto – 5
He had some signs, but that’s about it. You expect more from a player of his quality. He didn’t come up with anything great, zero creativity. England’s defence played well, but was certainly not impenetrable. His current contribution to the team is minimal and that’s partly why it doesn’t work in attack.
Patrik Schick – 6
Invisible. Drowned out on the tip himself. Had no chance. However, without the support of his teammates, it’s hard to do that. He tried to pull back and get more involved in the combination, but it didn’t lead to anything. He needs better service from the rest of the team.
Petr Ševčík – 5
Came on as a substitute in the 2nd half. He tried to stir up the Czech team’s sluggish performance, but was unsuccessful. He neither impressed nor disappointed.
Adam Hložek – 6
In the 64th minute he replaced Masopust. He played better than him, but not by much. His strengths lie in his directness, his drive on goal, his ability to make surprising decisions. But he doesn’t show them much in the tournament. As a substitute, he doesn’t have the impact on the game that is expected of him. He falls into the grey that Czech wingers show.
Alex Kral – 4
Started in the 64th minute. Wasn’t seen on the pitch at all. Alex Kral’s breakthrough at the Euro’s unfortunately didn’t happen. He was supposed to be one of the movers and shakers, unfortunately he is not. His performance against England clearly showed that he has no place in the starting line-up. He doesn’t have much time to fine-tune his form. Not that the other midfielders are any better.
Tomáš Pekhart and Matěj Vydra played too few minutes to be rated.
