The club from Gelsenkirchen has been discussing in recent days whether the logo of the club’s main sponsor, the Russian gas giant Gazprom, will be on the jerseys. The club has finally decided to remove any advertising associated with this long-time sponsor.
One of the world’s biggest gas exporters has been on Schalke jerseys since 2007. In recent years, it no longer invested as much money in the club from Gelsenkirchen as fans were used to. Even so, the club is financially dependent on money from Russia.
The start of the war in Ukraine has provoked a range of reactions across the board. The German newspaper Bild was clear: “We are done with Putin’s advertising.”
At the same time, Bild’s editorial office announced that all photos featuring the Gazprom logo would be overlaid with the caption.
Schalke management finally decided to remove the logo of their biggest sponsor from their jerseys. Only the Gelsenkirchen logo will appear on the jerseys from the next match. Schalke thus became the first club in Europe to take such a step.
“We came to this decision after discussions with the German branch of Gazprom. The name Schalke 04 will now appear on the jerseys, ” the club said on its official website.
Gazprom is also a key partner of UEFA and European football. It remains to be seen if other clubs and organisations will also boycott the gas giant.
Gazprom still remains the main sponsor of Schalke, which is currently fifth in the 2. Bundesliga and fighting for promotion. A possible end to funding from the Russian firm could be the beginning of the end for Schalke.
