It’s always busy around some of the tennis players. Germany’s Alexander Zverev is one of them. Although he is not even part of the ATP top ten at the moment, he is heard about every now and then. How has he dealt with the criticism from tennis experts and will he rank among the favourites of the US Open?

Alexander Zverev called the opinions of experts, which were aimed at the fact that he is not developing enough unlike other tennis players, as stupid. Michael Stich and Boris Becker were among the names negatively assessing the twenty-six-year-old’s tennis prospects.

The German hinted at his potential at this year’s French Open, where he reached the top four tennis players. Symbolically, in Paris, the place where his career was hampered by a nasty injury a year earlier.

Back then he played an evenly matched duel against the phenomenal Nadal and for his later statements in which he was very positive about his chances in the unplayed match, he also received a solid dose of criticism and ridicule.

The outcast Zverev?

The next chapter is the German tennis player’s problems in relation to women. In fact, Zverev is facing charges of battery for the second time.

The first time he was accused of this crime two years ago by his ex-girlfriend Olga Sharypova and this year by another ex-partner Brenda Pate. With the latter, the German tennis player has a daughter.

When Zverev recently remotely thanked Spain’s Alcaraz for his valuable tips when he dropped a few pointers for him while golfing to beat Russia’s Medvedev, it sparked unexpectedly strong criticism of the current world number one.

A lot of fans had no sympathy for the Spaniard’s association with Zverev despite the aforementioned problems. The Hamburg native definitely stirs emotions, but let’s get back to the tennis side of things.

A tournament triumph and the highest ambitions

The grass didn’t appeal to Zverev much this year, but the following farewell to clay was something completely different. On his home courts in Hamburg, the nearly two-metre tall tennis player pulled it off and won another tournament triumph after less than two years.

The following move to the American concrete also proved the German’s great form. After the aforementioned win over Medvedev, Zverev made it all the way to the semi-finals of the Masters in Cincinnati, where he defeated Djokovic and said goodbye with a 6:7, 5:7 defeat.

Finally..

It is a fact that for the problems Zverev had, he got into great shape quite quickly. Literally within a year and a day, you could say.

By triumphing at his home tournament and winning against a world top ten player a fortnight later, the German definitely boosted his confidence. He can play a great match on virtually any surface.

Zverev definitely deserves a position among the main challengers of the star duo. However, recent developments also suggest that, like the others, it will be very difficult for the German tennis player to threaten Alcaraz and Djokovic.
