After West Ham United’s triumph at Alkmaar, it was a tough battle on Swiss soil. In the second semi-final, Basel and Fiorentina faced off in a rematch.
The latter, unexpectedly, made the Italians more than equal opponents for a long time, taking away a valuable scalp from the first encounter 2: 1. Andy Diouf and Zeki Amdouni scored.
The rematch in the Swiss capital was also full of drama. First it was the Argentine Nicolas Gonzalez who shone in the visitors’ jersey, but then came the home response.
The match ended 1:2 in regulation time and went into extra time. In the second part of the game, the Czech national player Antonín Barák jumped in.
And it was the former Slavia player who paid off for coach Italiano. Barák sent his team to the Conference Finals with a goal in the 9th minute of overtime!
Luka Jovic found the ball in the back of the net and sent it back in front of the net with a header. A trio of players were unable to hit it and Barak found himself all alone in front of goalkeeper Hitz.
He then knew how to deal with the end and uncompromisingly cleared the ball into the home team’s net with his outside shoulder. The euphoria in the visitors’ ranks could have been full-blown.
The Czech midfielder then celebrated the goal by taking off his jersey, for which he was of course rewarded with a yellow card.
The final of this year’s Conference League will be played in Eden in Prague on 7 June and will have a strong Czech footprint.
On the side of the London Kladivarians, the Czech colours will be defended by Tomáš Souček and Vladimír Coufal, and on the other side by the aforementioned representative Barák. Among others, all three are former Slavs.
