Samir Nasri, former Arsenal and Manchester City player, retired at the age of 34. He grew into a great player at Arsenal and had his greatest successes at Manchester City, winning the League Cup and the Premier League twice.
He began his career at Olympique Marseille, where he was active from 2004 to 2008. He then settled at Arsenal for three years. The most exciting part of his career came when he moved from the Emirates Stadium to the Etihad. Here, between 2011 and 2017, he won the league title twice and enjoyed winning the League Cup once.
Beyond that, his career took unpleasant steps. Every year he changed his place of work. He played for Sevilla, Turkish Antalyaspor, West Ham and Anderlecht. At Anderlecht he met his former Manchester City teammate Vincent Kompany, who was the acting coach there.
In his national team career, he played for the France national team selection despite having Algerian roots. In the junior categories with France, he once won gold at the European Championships.
His career has also been influenced by his active life off the pitch. In 2018, he was banned by UEFA for a year and a half because he underwent intravenous treatment at a clinic in Los Angeles, which was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
The stoppage changed his outlook on football. “It changed my relationship with football. It was just a vitamin injection because I was sick. It wasn’t fair,” he said in an interview.
In addition to the ban, he had to stop playing for a while because of the coronavirus situation that stopped football around the world. He played only 7 games for Anderlecht and decided to end his football career.
The only place he would like to play again is Olympique Marseille. If he gets an offer, he won’t hesitate and will return to football with gusto.
