The winner of the first round was not known. Chelsea and Liverpool scored one each regular and offside goal, but the 1:1 draw is more of a loss for the Blues considering the second half.

Liverpool started actively, right in the sixth minute after an individual action of Dominik Szoboszlai shot off Diogo Jota. Enzo Fernandez had a great chance at the other end, but Ibrahim Konaté flashed an excellent block.

Mohamed Salah’s weak right-footed finish to the crossbar capped a successful opening quarter of an hour. Three minutes later, the visitors were celebrating, a superb pass from Salah was diverted into the net by Luis Diaz.

In the 26th minute, the Egyptian speedster could have struck, but the goalkeeper kept him out. And the bad luck continued to stick to him as his 30th minute goal was disallowed for a close offside. And six minutes later, he and his teammates were very unhappy.

They failed to finish a standard situation, which was finished with a precise shot by Axel Disasi. Chelsea even turned the tide within two minutes, this time VAR saved the visitors as Ben Chilwell was offside.

An attractive first half was closed by an inaccurate finish by Nicolas Jackson, and the game was tied. After the change of sides, Virgil van Dijk shot from the edge of the box, but missed by a whisker.

On the home side, Chilwell was alone in front of Alisson Becker, but the Brazilian goalkeeper showed his quality and held on. And Liverpool’s number one also succeeded in the 72nd minute, picking out Jackson in a similar position.

In the 76th minute, Jürgen Klopp replaced Salah, which affected the Egyptian, who angrily removed the white armband on his way off the pitch. Frustration may also have stemmed from the fact that Chelsea were clearly the better side in the second half.

Still, Liverpool could have celebrated in stoppage time, but Darwin Nunez narrowly missed the back post. The two teams thus parted with a point.
