On Thursday 30.12. a very sad news came out to the racing world. The legendary Czech racer Karel Loprais, who managed to win six times at the famous Dakar Rally, died.
The sad news came from Leo Loprais, son of Karel Loprais. The legendary Czech racer celebrated his 72nd birthday this year. He was a legendary racer who won the famous Dakar Rally six times.
Karel Loprais began his career in 1986, working as a mechanic and test driver at African races. He got behind the wheel as a racer in 1987 and achieved great success. He finished second in the truck category.
The very next year he surpassed his success and dominated the race for the first time in his career. Between 1988 and 2001 he managed to achieve the first place five more times. The Czech racer drove a Tatra truck.
Karel Loprais won the Dakar Rally a total of six times. This makes him the second best racer. Only the Russian driver Vladimir Chagin was better, who won seven times. The rivalry between Loprais and Chagin on the track was great, but outside the races they were friends.
Karel Loprais last raced in Dakar in 2006. After that, he took part in several more races as a companion to his nephew Ales, who continues the racing tradition.
