Austria fell unluckily to France, although they put in a good performance. Maximilian Wober scored an own goal to reduce his team’s chances of progression. The Austrians knew they had to score at least a point against the Poles.
They took the lead in the 9th minute through Gernot Trauner, before Krzysztof Piatek equalised in the first half. But the Austrians shot back in the 66th minute, with Christoph Baumgartner scoring.
An experienced Marko Arnautovic capped the scoring from the penalty spot. The Austrians now have three points and if they score in their last game, they will be in the relegation zone.
“I feel great, I’m really happy. It’s a good win, an important win, a huge win. It was intense, so I’m very tired, but very happy. It was close to our limit.
Especially against the ball, we were very intense on the countermoves. When we play close to our peak, we are a very good team. If you ask the Poles, I don’t think they will want to play us again,” Marcel Sabitzer told UEFA.
In their next match, Austria will be opposed by the strong Netherlands. “We want to win. We are playing a strong opponent, we know that. They like to play from behind, so we need our high and intense pressing.
If we can do that and produce on the pitch, we will be very strong and I am convinced we can score points,” added the former Bayern Munich and current Borussia Dortmund player.
