Dutch club PSV Eindhoven have appointed 45-year-old former striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy as their new coach. He will replace Roger Schmidt, who will leave his post at the end of the season.
Ruud Van Nistelrooy has signed a contract with PSV until June 2025. The team will start coaching from the new 2022/23 season.
“We are delighted to confirm that Ruud Van Nistelrooy is our new manager,” said PSV director of football John de Jong.
“Van Nistelrooy has gained valuable experience in the PSV organisation, but also with the national team. We are very confident that he is ready for his first senior managerial role. We are confident that he has a great and successful career ahead of him with the support of the experienced Fred Rutten and the coaching staff.”
Van Nistelrooy retired from his playing career in 2012. A year later he started his coaching career at PSV’s youth academy. In 2014, he became an assistant to Guus Hiddink with the Dutch national team.
“A couple of things have come together in the last few months,” Van Nistelrooy explained to the club’s website. “The appointment of Marcel Brand as PSV CEO and the conversation we had were the final push I needed to make a conscious decision and take this step.”
“PSV is ready to embark on a new path this summer and I am ready to play my part. Conversations with the board have reinforced the idea that we are an ambitious team and we are trying to create something special in the long term. I am excited about the task at PSV.”
During his playing career, he made his name mainly with PSV, Manchester United and Real Madrid. He managed to score 62 goals in 67 games for PSV between 1998 and 2001. He has 35 goals in 70 games for the Netherlands national team.
His greatest achievements as a player are an English league title with Manchester United and two Spanish league titles with Real Madrid. He won bronze with the Dutch national team at the 2004 European Championship.
