Russia will conclude their European Championship group stage journey with a match against Denmark. The Danes will be slight favourites, even though they are now last. Who will take the three points?
Russia have won once and lost once so far. It has not been at its best and even against the paper-weak Finns it struggled for a large part of the game. A draw with the Danes will be enough for them, as a Finnish win over the Belgians is unlikely.
The Danes are waiting for their first points. They fell to the Finns at the start of the tournament, with Christian Eriksen’s collapse affecting the match. They then put in a good performance against Belgium, but came up short on points thanks to the excellent Kevin de Bruyne.
Igor Diveev gave a good performance in the second game, the talented Russian stopper blocked two shots on goal among others. Of course, Artyom Dzjuba and Aleksandr Golovin are also a support.
Yussuf Poulsen scored Denmark’s only goal of the championship so far. Defenders Andreas Christensen and Simon Kjær are also a mainstay of the team, as well as midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
The Russians will have to do without Zhirkov, the Danes will logically miss Eriksen.
Russia relies on defense, getting at most one goal in five of their last seven games.
The Danes, on the other hand, are very productive, scoring eighteen goals in their last seven games.
Given the good performance against Belgium and the big motivation to advance for teammate Eriksen, I think Denmark will win.
