Real Madrid dominated the Champions League last weekend and won the double, but they are not slowing down and are already thinking about next season. Antonio Rüdiger, who is leaving Chelsea as a free agent, is coming to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Real Madrid’s defence is getting a big boost. The quality stopper pair Alaba-Militao is joined by another big force, Antonio Rüdiger. He has developed into one of the best stoppers in the Premier League last season and this season, and his performances led Chelsea to victory in the Champions League last season.
Indeed, he was the main building block of Tuchel’s solid defensive performance. Extremely strong, unbeatable in header duels and also tremendously fast, that’s what Rüdiger has been in the last two seasons. There have been voices that he is only suited to a three-man stopper and is useless in a classic four-man defence, but he has denied that with his performances this season.
It was known since the winter that he would not continue at Chelsea. Real Madrid, Bayern and PSG were interested, but Rüdiger had huge wage demands and was asking for up to €12 million a year. That’s why the interest of all the clubs dropped and for some time the future of the power stopper was unclear.
But then he gave a fantastic performance at the Santiago Bernabéu in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid, which he crowned with a goal. It was after this match that Ancelotti was supposed to ask the management for the arrival of Rüdiger, who also lowered his salary demands.
So everything was already going hand in hand for a long time it was clear that the 29-year-old German would leave for Real Madrid. However, an official announcement was awaited until the end of the season.
In the Spanish capital, Rüdiger signed a 4-year contract and will be presented at the Ciudad Real Madrid on Monday, June 20 at 12 noon.
“I am proud to announce that I am joining Real Madrid. I’m incredibly excited for all the challenges ahead and can’t wait to start my first game for this huge club,” Rüdiger announced on his social media.
