The first big surprise, unfortunately for a team that will be under even more scrutiny from Czech football fans this season. Bayer Leverkusen got off to the worst possible start to the season.
The traditional Bundesliga team went to Elversberg, the newcomer to the third highest German competition, in the cup a week before the start of the Bundesliga. But from the start, the team did not fare well at all.
In the third minute, the clear outsider took the lead. Two minutes later, Adam Hložek scored his first goal in his new jersey, but unfortunately it was no use.
In the 17th minute Elversberg scored the second goal. Charles Aranguiz equalised in the 30th minute, only for Leverkusen to score again seven minutes later.
To make matters worse, in the 74th minute the newcomer to the third league took a two-goal lead. However, Hložek was no longer on the pitch at that point. Patrik Schick was.
And it was Schick who scored the last goal of the game. In the 89th minute he made the score 4:3 in favour of Elversberg.
A real shame for Leverkusen. They were going into the season with huge ambitions to win the trophy and the DFB Pokal could have been a great opportunity to target.
In the Champions League and the Bundesliga it will be much more difficult.
