Ronaldo flew to Portugal instead of supporting his teammates in the derby
The battle of Manchester took place in the early hours of Sunday evening, with home side City taking on rivals United at the Etihad Stadium. In the end, the Red Devils’ biggest star, Portuguese canon Cristiano Ronaldo, did not enter the match at all due to injury.
In fact, on Friday, the club doctors told United manager Ralf Rangnick that the Portuguese goalscorer was being treated for a hip injury. However, Ronaldo wanted to start the important match despite the pain, but the German coach would not allow him to do so.
Media speculates that the star Portuguese was angry with United manager Ralf Rangnick when he announced that he would not send him in the starting eleven for the derby with City due to the injury. Rangnick had reportedly told the player that he needed fresh players for the game and believed that Ronaldo could intervene in the flow of the match from the bench.
However, this did not go down well with the star striker and he was expected to pack his bags and fly off to Portugal. Teammates were reportedly very surprised not to see their teammate at the team hotel. So Ronaldo did not support his mates at the stadium, where they were beaten 4-1 by hosts City.
Manager Rangnick was tight-lipped after the game about Ronaldo’s mysterious injury
After the lost match, the United manager also answered the question of the absence of his biggest star. “I have to believe my medical department,” lamented manager Rangnick over the missing Ronaldo, according to The Sun. “Our doctor came to me on Friday morning before training and told me Cristiano couldn’t train because of some hip flexor problems and the same on Saturday,” he added.
United face a rematch in the millionaire Champions League against Atlético Madrid in a week’s time, from where they took a hopeful draw to the British Isles. It immediately raised the question of whether the Portuguese would be able to return to the European stage. “I don’t really know now, I was hoping to have him available for this game as well,” Rangnick hinted at a possible dispute. “We have two important games against Spurs and Atlético and we have to concentrate on that,” the coach said.
Former club legend Roy Keane hinted at a possible problem
Former United captain Roy Keane added fuel to the fire before the game. “First he (Rangnick) talks about Ronaldo being a machine and then he comes up with some hip flexor,” the club legend asked in an incomprehensible voice in a pre-match interview on Sky Sports .
The truth will probably come out in time, but it’s obvious that things are definitely boiling in the bowels of the club after the derby debacle. Let’s hope we see Ronaldo back soon. Whatever his form, he is attracting the attention of a wide range of supporters and detractors of the club.
