Manchester United has come alive since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure. Erik ten Hag can be happy not only with the improving performances but also with the results. What does former Red Devils player Karel Poborsky have to say about the end of the Portuguese legend?
Not Ronaldo, not a problem? It almost seems like it. With the exception of just one of Manchester United’s competitive losses, the Portuguese was there for all of them. Without him, though, Erik ten Hag’s charges shine.
The last time he came on for the Red Devils, it was a 1-3 loss to Aston Villa. Four days later, the same opponent Manchester United beat 4: 2 in another competition without Ronaldo and started a winning streak. These have now come 8 in a row.
6 of these wins have come after the World Cup in Qatar, before which Ronaldo managed to agree a contract termination with the club. And the Old Trafford outfit has indeed looked much better since then.
Ten Hague’s charges have moved up to third in the league and are trying to catch up with city rivals, who are in second place, and first-placed Arsenal. At the very least, they can erase Manchester City’s lead in Saturday afternoon’s derby.
Before the game, former Red Devils player Karel Poborsky commented on Ronaldo’s departure in the Canal+ Sport studio. Could that alone be worth the improvement in form? “It’s probably not that simple, but it certainly contributed to it. The air has been cleared, the hot potato is somewhere else,” he allowed himself to be heard.
“It’s definitely a completely different climate for the coach now, too. He’s started to reign it in, some of the players feel different. I think it has helped the club as a whole,” Poborský added.
Poborsky played for Manchester United from 1996 to 1998. With the team he won the Premier League once and the English Super Cup twice. He played 48 competitive matches for the Red Devils, scoring 6 goals and notching 3 assists.
