Big day for England, big day for Manchester United, big day for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star made his debut in the game against Newcastle. How did he do?
Before the game even started, an avalanche of fans wearing Cristiano Ronaldo jerseys flooded the grounds of the Old Trafford shrine. Saturday belonged to him, at least in England. He was making his second debut for Manchester United.
Against Newcastle, he started in the starting line-up. So the atmosphere in the stadium was very joyful and positive. It was a spectacular experience that even the Portuguese himself enjoyed. You could see it in his performance. He was very relaxed, he enjoyed the game.
His mood was not dampened by the opposition’s crowded defence, which Manchester United struggled to penetrate. Ronaldo waited until the first act to score his first goal.
Mason Greenwood managed to get free on the right side and finished from outside the box. However, his shot was telegraphed and goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was unable to catch the ball. He just knocked it towards the lurking Portuguese, who had no problem sending it into the empty net.
The second half was a little more even statistically, but it was a lot more goal-rich. In the 56th minute Javier Manquillo equalised at 1-1, but six minutes later Ronaldo added his second goal of the game.
Ronaldo’s scoring spree ended, but Manchester United added two more goals. Bruno Fernandes ripped the net with a superb shot from outside the sixteen.
After a pass from Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard also scored to make it 4-1.
