Romania says goodbye to the World Cup. After advancing from the first place in the group in the competition with Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine, they are now in the eighth round, where they lost to the Netherlands. Coach Edward Iordanescu, however, believes in a brighter tomorrow.

Romania entered the European Championships with a big 3-0 win over Ukraine. It surprised everyone and increased its chances of qualification. In the next game, they fell to Belgium, but it was by no means a disaster.

In the last match, a draw with Slovakia was enough to take the top spot, as all teams had the same points and the Romanians had the best score. But the bad luck was that the opponent in the quarter-finals was the strong Netherlands, who were only third in their group.

The Dutch were on a roll in the group, but it was a rollercoaster ride against Romania, eventually winning 3: 0. “The truth is that after twenty minutes our opponent managed to throw us off balance with an individual action and score.

Then it didn’t work as we thought it would. I’m sorry we couldn’t get to their level,” said Romanian coach Iordanescu after the match.

But he is not worried about finishing in the tournament because even advancing from the group is an achievement. “We finished a great story, but of course there is some sadness. We gave it our all as always. I thank my boys, the fans, the people at home and Romanians around the world,” he added.

He now hopes for more success in the future. “We have to take inspiration from this. The new generations have to take an example from these guys. The unity we have here, the cohesion between the Romanians and the national team, this could be a new beginning.”

“I’m sure that whatever happens, this team has the strength to have a good future and make it to the World Cup. It is important that we make it through two qualifiers in a row,” he concluded.
