Krejcikova returns to the scene of the crime
The French tennis holiday is here again. Several Czech representatives will also grace the Parisian courts. Naturally, the fans have the highest hopes for our tennis players.
After health problems, our top-ranked tennis player Barbora Krejcikova, who is currently the world number two, is returning to the game. In the first round she will play Dianne Parry.
Although Krejčíková has not played for a quarter of a year, she won both singles and doubles at Roland Garros last year and would like to build on her success at least partially.
If the Moravian tennis player does well, she could face Victoria Azarenka in the eighth round, Anett Kontaveit in the quarterfinals and Ons Jabeur in the semifinals.
The biggest favourite of the tournament, however, is Iga Swiatek, who Krejcikova could potentially face in the final.
Our other tennis players will also be in the game
Karolina Pliskova will also be in action when she plays Tessah Andrianjafitrima. Petra Kvitova, who has been in the semi-finals of the Paris Grand Slam twice in the past, will play Anna Bondárová.
Kateryna Siniakova will play her first match against Petra Marticova, while Tereza Martincova will play Shelby Rogers.
Karolína Muchová will play the wildcard Carole Monnet, while Marie Bouzkova will challenge Lauren Davis.
Linda Noskova, last year’s junior champion, has made it through qualifying to the main stage of the tournament and is yet to find out the name of her opponent.
Three Czechs among men, we won’t see Nadal vs. Djokovic final
In the men’s singles, three Czech players will play. Jiří Veselý will play Steve Johnson, Jiří Lehečka, who will have his debut in Paris, will challenge Belgian David Goffin.
Zdeněk Kolář made it through the qualifying rounds, but like the aforementioned Linda Nosková, he is yet to find out the name of his opponent.
In the men’s bracket, of course, everyone is interested in who will dominate the tournament. The most talked about are Rafael Nadal, who is at home in Paris, and Novak Djokovic, who wants to catch the Spaniard in the number of Grand Slams won.
Many hoped that we could see both legendary tennis players in the final. But alas. Their epic battle, if it ever comes to pass, could take place in the quarterfinals.
