His challenger journey is almost over, picking up win after win. Even Roger Federer believes in his success in the most valuable matches of the grass season.
A large number of tennis fans have confidence in Murray’s quality and experience, but Roger Federer is also putting his support behind him. The latter has described himself as a big fan of Andy Murray. “I hope he will play many, many rounds at Wimbledon,” the Swiss thus supported the recently announced goal of the British tennis player.
The two legendary players have played 25 matches against each other, including the Wimbledon final. While Federer retired last year, Murray is moving on. The Swiss tennis legend appreciated the fact that Murray has overcome all the health issues and is still a part of the action on the ATP circuit. He simply loves tennis.
On Saturday, the Glasgow native’s mission continued on the grass court challengers. He was on a streak of eight wins in a row before his semi-final match against Portugal’s Nuno Borges. Murray was also a big favourite against the ten years younger Portuguese.
Saturday’s semifinal match
Borges is the highest-ranked of the opponents the British tennis player has beaten so far on his quest for challengers. He is ranked 73rd on the rankings.
In the first set, Murray showed his extravagance. He lost only three frames on his serve during the first set and one break was enough to win 6::3.
In the second set, the Portuguese tennis player enjoyed breaking Murray’s serve, but lost his serve three times himself and lost 2::6. The home player won his ninth straight match in 74 minutes and will be looking to advance to his second final in seven days.
Up the rankings
Andy Murray would like to get as close to the 32nd position on the rankings as possible. In fact, for a dream run through Wimbledon it would be optimal to start among the seeded players. If Murray makes the final in Nottingham, he will climb to 38th and be within striking distance of his goal.
In any case, his performance at the Queen’s Club next week will be decisive. There he will be playing for a big chunk of points, but also against top quality opponents . But Murray shouldn’t get lost among them.
