The Brazilian striker or winger has mentioned several times that he had to choose between Real Madrid and Barcelona in the past. He chose the Madrid big club, where he has already won everything he could.
Rodrygo spoke to 90min about what it was like before his transfer to Real Madrid. The Brazilian has never made a secret of the fact that he has been a big fan of the White Ballet since he was a kid. What was it like back then?
“Everything was done with Barcelona, all that was left was to sign the contract. I asked my father if Real Madrid had contacted me, but he said he didn’t know anything, that Real Madrid hadn’t contacted me,” the Brazilian footballer let slip.
Rodryga was taken aback by this and decided to take the solution that almost nobody would do anymore, as any talent would have already jumped at the offer from Catalonia.
“I asked my father to wait for the weekend. We had a game that I told my dad I would shine in and Real Madrid would just have to notice me. He wasn’t too happy about it. We had an offer from Barcelona, I could have played with Messi, but I decided to wait,” Rodrygo expressed.
It was a move that could have changed everything. Barcelona could have backed out, Real Madrid wouldn’t have had to call and Rodrygo would have had to stay in Brazil.
“I went to that game, scored a hat-trick and set up one goal. During the game, my father got a call from Real Madrid. But he didn’t tell me right away. He left the next day without saying anything. When he came back, he came to my room, threw Barcelona and Real Madrid jerseys in front of me and told me to choose,” recalled the talented striker.
Which club Rodrygo chose, everyone already knows. In his own words, he didn’t have to think about his choice for a moment. Real Madrid paid 45 million euros for him to Brazilian Santos, he was only 18 years old at the time and already showed his potential in his first season.
He is now a member of the starting line-up and is worth €100 million. Together with Vinicius, he forms the main attacking force of the Madrid team. In the first game of the new season, he scored a goal right away and helped his team win at Bilbao.
