Brazil’s matches with Argentina are traditionally heated. And so it was in the last match at the Maracana. But it wasn’t so much the players.
The police went on a rampage in the Argentinian fans’ sector, beating the fans with batons and the match was abandoned. Even goalkeeper Emilio Martínez wanted to get involved in the scuffle.
After the initial emotions subsided, the Argentina players wanted to refuse to finish the match, whereupon Rodrygo should have declared that they were not cowards and should go and finish the match. However, this didn’t sit well with Messi, who reportedly retorted to the Brazilian that they were the world champions and were certainly no cowards.
He then grabbed Rodrygo by the back of the neck and had some words with him, with his faithful servant Rodrigo de Paul assisting him with the situation. After a moment, he pushed Rodry away from Messi.
After Real Madrid’s match against Napoli, in which Rodrygo scored his sixth goal in four games, journalists wanted to revisit the incident, but the 22-year-old was not authorised to do so.
“No, I can’t talk about that. I just can’t. Madrid won’t let me, will they?” he winked with a laugh at a passing Real Madrid official who dragged him away with him.
But they must be delighted with Rodrygo’s current form at the Bernabéu. In his last four games in white, he has scored six goals and added four assists. And that is key for Las Blancos given the injury to Vinícius and the shooting discomfort of Joselu in recent games.
