Roberto Carlos was particularly impressed with the English national team at EURO 2020, which he said played very well. He would then choose Luke Shaw, who has had a very successful season, as the best player of the tournament.
A year ago, the situation of the English centre-back did not look good at all. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought in Alex Telles, who was expected to push Shaw to the bench.
However, the Manchester United left-back started to perform excellently and was selected for the Premier League team of the season, and the Brazilian reinforcement ended up starting only 9 games in the English top flight.
Shaw then confirmed his performances at EURO 2020, where he scored a goal and 3 assists in 6 matches. It should be added that that goal was the only goal scored by the English in the final, not counting the penalty shootout.
“He was the best player in the tournament. He has to continue his performance and he has to play exactly the way he played this year. That’s what’s important,” Carlos has nothing but praise for the England midfielder.
However, the Brazilian legend didn’t just like Shaw, but the whole Albion national team, which he loved to watch. “I saw the whole EURO 2020 and England played very well,” Carlos did not hide his enthusiasm for the English game.
“If they maintain their standard, they deserve to win a big trophy,” looking ahead to next year’s World Cup in Qatar.
There, the English will no doubt be among the big favourites again. But it will be the French, who left the European Championships very disappointed, who will want to defend their title. And we cannot forget the other great powers, led by Italy.
And who does Carlos think will shine the brightest at the next World Cup? “I think it will be the same players: Kylian Mbappe, Nicolo Barella, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and of course Neymar.”
