Salernitana are currently in last place, 8 points behind the relegation places. It is therefore quite unlikely that they can even climb out of the relegation zone this season. However, its relegation from Serie A could be greatly accelerated.
The team is at risk of being expelled from Italy’s top competition due to the fact that the team’s owner is also the owner of Lazio of Rome. The ownership of two clubs in the same competition is not allowed by FIFA regulations, which are thus trying to avoid a possible conflict of interest.
It was Lazio owner Claudio Lotito who was involved in the re-founding of Salernitana in 2011, as the club had gone bankrupt twice before. This year, the Salerno club returned to Italy’s top competition after more than 20 years.
The president of the Italian Football Federation, Gabriele Gravina, informed the public of Salernitana’s possible expulsion at a press conference on Tuesday: “If a buyer is not found within ten days, Salernitana will be expelled from the competition.”
“I wish Salernitana to find a buyer within ten days, I still think it is possible. I have absolute respect for the city of Salerno and the fans, I’ve been showing it since May when I started dealing with this problem,” Gravina added.
Unfortunately, the ownership problems have now been joined by coronavirus problems. Salernitana was unable to travel for Tuesday’s match against Udinese because the local health department would not allow her to do so.
Legendary Bayern player Franck Ribéry also signed with the Italian newcomer club this summer. The 38-year-old winger has notched 2 assists and no goals in 12 games.
