The recent reduction of prizes at ATP and WTA tournaments is not well received by some tennis players. For example, Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov expressed that tournament rewards are no longer motivating enough for tennis players. Because of this, the world number eleven, according to his words, does not try to play as before.

Denis Shapovalov is not alone in calling for a renewed increase in the rewards. In the past, for example, John Isner or Benoit Paire have spoken out on this topic. For example, the French tennis player said that it is better for him to drop out in the first round than to work like a fool for a few extra dollars.

These tennis players have now been joined by world number 11 Denis Shapovalov. He has commented on the strict hygiene measures that are wearing tennis players down, in addition to the diminishing rewards.

“I think more and more players will be opting out of tournaments. Tennis players won’t even want to play because of lower rewards. They are not motivating enough for us,” the Canadian tennis player shocked.

He is calling for an increase in the rewards again. “Hopefully, the ATP will do everything possible to increase the rewards again. A lot of us only continue because of sponsorship deals, but otherwise I feel that a lot of tennis players don’t want to play at all. It’s complicated,” said Denis Shapovalov.

Rewards aren’t the only thing that’s bothering tennis players at the moment. There are also strict hygiene measures that are wearing tennis players down. “I don’t try to play as much as I used to. I try to stay out of the bubble as much as possible. They are mentally draining and depressing. So many players have it,” Shapovalov concluded.
