A big return to Las Vegas, more races in Monaco and China or no France. Formula 1 has confirmed its calendar for next year with a record number of races. In 2023, the drivers will take part in 24 Grands Prix! So what destinations can we look forward to?
Formula 1 recently confirmed what the race calendar for the 2023 season will look like, which of course had to be approved by the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC).
In fact, you can take a look at the full calendar for yourself in the attached F1 Twitter post below. A record number of 24 Grands Prix await fans and everyone involved!
The season traditionally kicks off with the Bahrain Grand Prix in early March. The last race will then be the Abu Dhabi race, which Formula 1 will run on 26 November. The 2023 season will therefore run for almost 9 months.
But don’t look for any surprises in the calendar. The Chinese Grand Prix returns to Formula 1, and after a one-year break for the football World Cup, the 2023 season will also see a race in Qatar. So logically, some of the venues had to be out of the running.
From next year, the queen of motorsport will not visit France, and a place in the calendar was also vacated by the Russian Grand Prix, which was not held this year due to the war and Russian aggression.
And the twenty-fourth addition to the already large family is the Las Vegas Grand Prix. This is a big comeback, as Las Vegas hosted F1 races in 1981 and 1982. Formula 1 has also confirmed that it will be held here on an unusual Saturday at 22:00. For fans from the Czech Republic, however, this will not be a major change. The time shift will cause the start at 7am on Sunday.
For Formula 1 fans, it is also important news that the races at Spa and Monaco, which has even signed a contract with F1 until 2025, have recently been confirmed. It is also good news that none of the races will clash with the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans. The date for pre-season testing is not yet known.
Statement from the President of the FIA
“The presence of 24 races on the FIA Formula 1 World Championship calendar for 2023 is further proof of the growth and attractiveness of the sport on a global scale,” said Mohammed Ben Sulayem in an interview with F1.
“The addition of new venues and the retention of traditional races underlines the good governance of the sport by the FIA. I am delighted that in 2023 we will be able to bring the new era of exciting Formula One racing created by the FIA regulations for 2022 to a wider audience,” the FIA President added.
“In drawing up the 2023 F1 calendar, WMSC members have also kept in mind the date of the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans,” he concluded.
