Rescue Hertha? The hardest task of my career, Magath admitted. Vladimir Darida’s team is full of problems
Felix Magath has had a long, successful and controversial coaching career. Although he hasn’t been as visible in recent years, that changed in March when Hertha Berlin hired him. Felix Magath has had a long, successful and controversial coaching career. While he hasn’t been as visible in recent years, that changed in March when Hertha Berlin hired him. The demanding coach had to lead the team around Vladimir Darida, which he did. However, he described it as the most difficult task of his career. Why?
He won three Bundesliga titles, twice with Bayern, once with Wolsburg. In addition, he won the German Cup winner’s trophy twice with Bayern and once for the German League Cup.
Felix Magath followed up his successful playing career as a very good, yet extremely demanding coach, who was certainly not well liked by his charges. Czech players such as Jan Morávek and Václav Pilař can also say something about that.
However, his demanding nature may bear fruit in the short term. Even Hertha Berlin, who had a lot to do to hold on, was convinced of this. In March, they hired him as their coach until the end of the season.
The team around Vladimir Darid managed to keep their first league affiliation, albeit only thanks to the play-offs. In the first match the team from the German capital did not keep up with Hamburg and lost 0:1 at home, but won 2:0 away and there was much to celebrate.
Magath took a short time to evaluate his engagement at the club and the management will definitely not be happy with his words. Why? First of all, he revealed that he was surprised by the situation inside the team. He also quoted the words of his predecessor Tayfun Korkut, who reportedly felt that he was on his own at the club.
Even Magath was said to have received no major support. He felt that everyone around him did not care about the situation. “It was the hardest job of my career. I knew it. But you never see from the outside what it looks like on the inside. I’ m surprised that Berlin hasn’t been able to get the club on the right track for a long time,” Bulinews quoted him as saying.
And what’s probably the worst part? He was unable to name a single big or biggest problem. The reason? Because there was nothing but problems at the club, supposedly.
It will be interesting to see if the biggest fire is put out or if Hertha will struggle extremely in the next Bundesliga season.
