It is not only a very memorable match, but an even more memorable tournament. The Czech Republic dominated all the matches in Group D and advanced to the knockout stage from first place. However, our national team was losing against Germany at first, but Marek Heinz made sure that it was even with a great goal. Milan Baroš then finished the job.

Euro 2004 is not only a memorable tournament for Czech fans, but also a matter of the heart. However, as we all know today, the journey of our national team at this European Championship ended just before the gates of the final.
However, today, 23 June 2022, it is exactly 18 years since the Olomouc-born Heinz scored such a great goal against Germany.
The Czech national team were 0:1 down at the start of the match when Michael Ballack scored in the twenty-first minute. Heinz’s goal, however, brought the match back to level and then Baroš turned the game around in the 77th minute.
The 2:1 win over Germany meant both that the Germans advanced out of the group (from first place) without any problems, but also that our players ended all hopes of the Germans’ advancing out of the group. In short – Heinz and Baros sent the Germans home.
From second place, but with a loss of five points, the Dutch advanced from Group D. In the quarter-finals, the Czechs beat Denmark with three second-half goals, first from Jan Koller and then twice from Baros.
At that time, however, our national team did not know that a bitter end awaited them in the semi-final against Greece. The later winners of the tournament scored only seven goals in the whole Euro, but even that number was enough for their overall triumph.
In the grand final at the Benfica Lisbon stadium, Angelos Charisteas was the Greek hero in the 57th minute.
