- Chelsea beat Bournemouth in the fourth round of the Premier League
- The only goal was scored by Christopher Nkunku
- Anthony Taylor sets a new Premier League record
In Saturday’s action in the English top flight, almost all the favourites, except Liverpool, managed to win their games against the paper underdogs. Manchester United handled Southampton, Manchester City won their battle with Brighton, Chelsea beat Bournemouth thanks to a late goal.
And it was the last-mentioned showdown that brought an interesting conclusion. It was Christopher Nkunku who, in the 86th minute, fired the London side to victory.
Chelsea jumped up to seventh place in the league table, but eighth-placed Newcastle still has one game to play. However, the match between the Stamford Bridge club and Bournemouth set a new Premier League record.
Specifically, it was taken care of by referee Anthony Taylor. He handed out fourteen yellow cards in the match, which is the most in the history of the English top flight in just one match.
Judge Taylor gave six yellow warnings to players of the home team, eight times he warned Chelsea players. The previous record was held by Tottenham’s match against Sheffield on 16 September 2023. Spurs won 2-1, referee Peter Bankes handed out 13 yellow cards.
Chelsea have a discipline problem
It must be added, however, that Chelsea have had a discipline problem in recent seasons. In fact, the London club broke the record for the most yellow cards handed out to players in a single Premier League season in 2023/24 – 105.
On the other hand, however, the Blues have not had a player who ranks among the players with the highest number of individual cautions in Premier League history.
