All five lights are out and the British Grand Prix is off! But on the first lap of the race, two of the most serious players in the championship battle had already fought some fierce battles with each other.
Especially on the ‘Hangar’ straight, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were truly neck and neck.
Then, on the run-in to turn nine of the first lap, there was contact between the Red Bull and Mercedes drivers. You can see the big crash that followed.
Hamilton just missed the apex of the corner itself here, at turn 9, which of course Verstappen could not have anticipated.
The Dutch driver was shaken up after the crash, but fortunately it doesn’t look like any serious injuries. However, this is a sharp racing incident and it’s hard to blame anyone for it.
However, Verstappen’s Red Bull is very badly damaged, so the Dutch driver has ended his run in this Grand Prix prematurely. Red flags have been waved at the circuit, meaning that race directors have decided to stop the British Grand Prix.
Toto Wolff, the head of the Mercedes AMG F1 stable, reportedly sent a diagram to race director Michael Masi moments later showing where the driver should be at Copse corner.
Let’s hope, however, that Verstappen will not develop any serious health complications and will be able to hit the track for the next race.
