Formula 1 has its fifteenth race of the season this weekend, the Singapore Grand Prix. As usual, qualifying was scheduled for Saturday, but red flags were raised after the first part of the race. Lance Stroll suffered a huge crash and completely smashed his monoplane.
Saturday’s qualifying for Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix started at 15:00. Given the results and predictions from free practice, it was really something to look forward to.
Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez had complained about the set-up so far in the race weekend, the reigning world champion specifically about the gear changes. Other teams – Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren – have also been very solid in practice.
The fight for pole position is still open, and we are currently in the first part of qualifying. At the end of the race, Lance Stroll suffered a huge crash.
The Aston Martin driver failed to make it through the last corner and sent his car into the wall. You can see the whole moment in the video below.
Although the time limit for Q1 had expired at the time of the crash, some drivers were still on track completing their quick attempts. However, with Stroll left standing on the finishing straight, the race directors understandably immediately reached for the red flags, ending the first qualifying segment.
One of the candidates for pole position, Oscar Piastri, paid the price. The McLaren driver was not able to complete his next quick attempt and thus failed to progress to Q2, the second part of qualifying, with a time of 1:32.902.
The circuit started to accelerate significantly thanks to the rubber after several quick attempts by all drivers.
Surprisingly, Júki Cunoda won the first part of qualifying. Sergio Pérez finished second, Nico Hülkenberg third, Liam Lawson fourth and Kevin Magnussen fifth. The tech-pro barrier is currently awaiting repair, after which qualifying will continue.
