Records need to be broken, will any fall in the winter window in the Premier League?
The winter transfer window has started in the Premier League and some of the teams are in dire need of reinforcements. As time goes on, the transfer sums are reaching unparalleled heights. Let’s take a look at who the top Premier League clubs spent the highest amounts on. Maybe some of the records will fall in this transfer window.
Tottenham
North London club Tottenham Hotspur is a little behind the other big clubs, yet the sums paid for the three most expensive transfers are hard to imagine for the average person.
- Tanguy Ndombele (Lyon) – £54m in 2019
- Richarlison (Everton) – £52.5m in 2022
- Cristian Romero (Atalanta) – £45 million in 2022
Arsenal
We’ll stick with the North London clubs. In the case of the Gunners, a defender surprisingly made the top three most expensive players.
- Nicolas Pepe (Lille) – £72 million in 2019
- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Dortmund) – £56 million in 2018
- Ben White (Brighton) – £50 million in 2021
Chelsea
The last of the big clubs from London is Chelsea. Here, just for interest, we also list the fourth most expensive player, as he is a goalkeeper and his price tag surpasses many a great outfield player.
- Romelu Lukaku (Inter Milan) – £96 million in 2021
- Wesley Fofana (Leicester) – £72.4 million in 2022
- Kai Havertz (Leverkusen) – £72 million in 2020
- Kepa Arrizabalaga (Bilbao) – £72 million in 2018
Liverpool
Liverpool are very specific in this ranking as the three most expensive players include one defender and one goalkeeper. Moreover, the top spot is not yet certain as it depends on the player’s performance how much more Liverpool will pay in bonuses.
- Darvin Núñez (Benfica) – up to £85 million in 2020
- Virgil Van Dijk (Southampton) – £75 million in 2018
- Alisson Becker (AS Roma) – £65 million in 2018
Manchester United
Even in the case of the Red Devils, we can find one defender in the top three, and it is even the most expensive one ever.
- Paul Pogba (Juventus) – £94.5 million in 2016
- Antony (Ajax) – £85.5 million in 2022
- Harry Maguire (Leicester) – £78.3 million in 2019
Manchester City
We’ve saved the record holders for last, as the most expensive purchase in Premier League history belongs to the Citizens.
- Jack Grealish (Aston Villa) – £100 million in 2021
- Rodri (Atlético Madrid) – £63 million in 2019
- Ruben Dias (Benfica) – £62 million in 2020
We’ll find out if any of the record-breaking transfers will be broken in early February. Finally, it’s worth noting that anyone who follows the Premier League, and other sports, knows that the amount spent on a player’s transfer is certainly no guarantee of great performances and success.
