Football enthusiasts sometimes pay crazy amounts for rare items. The auction of a set of six Messi jerseys from the World Cup in Qatar will be no different, with estimates running into the tens of millions USD.

A set of 6 Argentine jerseys worn by the captain during the Qatar World Cup, that’s exactly the item that will be auctioned off at the end of this month by the world famous auction company Sotheby’s.

These jerseys were worn by the Argentine during the first halves of the two group matches, the eighth finals, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and of course the final of last year’s Mundial itself.

The price of this exclusive football gift is estimated by the American newspaper Barron’s, which is in the financial sector. The total amount for which the product is expected to be auctioned at the end of November is said to be in the region of USD 10 million.

If the jerseys do indeed sell for that price, it will be the most expensive sports item ever auctioned at a public auction. The current record is held by basketball player Michael Jordan’s jersey from 1998. At last year’s auction, he paid around the aforementioned $10 million for it.

Another record-breaking item, this time from the world of football, is again a white and blue jersey from South America. It is Diego Maradona’s jersey. In it, the striker hit the iconic ‘hand of God’ into the England net at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

This unique piece was auctioned off for more than 9 million dollars again in 2022. Lionel Messi posted a statement on his Instagram account towards the auction, once again showing off an amazing gesture.

In fact, part of the proceeds will go to the UNICAS project run by the Sant Joan de Déu Children’s Hospital (SJD) in Barcelona. The funds will be used to meet the needs of children with rare diseases.

The auction starts on 30 November and runs until 14 December. In the meantime, bidders can see the set for themselves, as it will be on display at Sotheby’s galleries in New York.
