Recall Sigma Olomouc’s sensational draw with Real Madrid! What stars played for the White Ballet then?

Sigma Olomouc’s successful period is long behind them. In any case, it must be admitted that Hanaks have long been one of the teams that are relatively well systematically managed, even if they don’t have much capital behind them. One of Sigma’s greatest club successes can be counted among the draw with the legendary Real Madrid.

Whether you want to or not, you can’t stop time. It’s been an incredible 30 years since that memorable match and the memories of the match are slowly starting to fade.

Let’s reminisce together. We will recall the goals, the line-up of Brückner’s team and also point out some of the stars who played against Sigma. Karel Brückner’s faithful gave them a hard time and even shocked them at the Andras Stadium.

The opening match was played in the quarter-finals of the 1991/92 UEFA Cup
4. march and the whole of Olomouc rose up in football! Indeed, the White Ballet stars, led by Fernando Hierro (14-year playing career at Real Madrid and 102 goals scored) and Manuel Sanchís (third highest number of games played for Real Madrid in history – 710) were to play on its soil.

The complete shock came in the 27th minute of the match when the Olomouc players went 1:0 up. After a standard situation, Pavel Hapal scored with a beautiful fish. In the 45th minute, the aforementioned Hierro replied after a successful combination.

The return leg in Madrid

The Moravian team was also looking for a sensational draw in the rematch played on 18 March 1992. In Spain, Sigma held a 0:0 draw until the 82nd minute. But then the dreaded goalscorer Hugo Sánchez, who was in his last season at Real, struck.

A wonderful goal from the Mexican striker, who has been on the professional football scene for a sensational 21 years, ended all Olomouc’s hopes. See for yourself!

By the way, who doesn’t know Hugo Sánchez, he is probably the most famous Mexican footballer ever, scoring almost 400 goals (397) in his long career. He scored 208 goals for Real Madrid and is the club’s 6th top scorer in history.

Olomouc footballers were a really unpleasant opponent even for such a big club, which was supported by up to 40 000 spectators at home.

Real Madrid subsequently fell out in the semi-finals with Juventus (2: 3 on aggregate). The winner of the 1991/92 UEFA Cup was Ajax Amsterdam, whose victory over the Turin side was decided by a higher number of away goals (0:0 at home, 2:2 away).
