Real Madrid won the Super Cup and Ancelotti took a dig at Barcelona: We kept the ball too much for my taste

Real Madrid’s first trophy of the season has arrived. Los Blancos beat Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup and Athletic Bilbao in the final. After winning the trophy, coach Carlo Ancelotti did not forget to take a dig at the Catalans who did not like his style.
Real Madrid controlled the final against Athletic from the first minute. Most of the time, they kept the ball in their opponents’ half, not allowing the Basque team any chances.
In the first half, Los Blancos’ ball possession climbed to 60%. However, Modric added to this by scoring a goal with a beautiful shot that sent Real Madrid into the lead.
In the 52nd minute, Karim Benzema increased the lead to 2:0 with a penalty and the match seemed decided. Real Madrid controlled the pace of the game and it looked like nothing could happen. Yet the final twist was still to come.
In the 87th minute, an Athletic player headed a close-range shot into Milito’s hand in the whitewash, so the referee called a penalty and rather incomprehensibly awarded the Brazilian stopper a red card. If Athletic had converted the penalty, they should have equalised against ten with about 7 minutes set.
But Raúl García’s penalty was kicked by Thibaut Courtois with an amazing save and there was no drama. Real Madrid were able to celebrate their first trophy of the season, so the players and coaches were in good spirits after the game.
This was confirmed by coach Carlo Ancelotti. When asked which match he liked better, the semi-final with Barcelona or the final with Athletic, the Italian coach answered very jokingly.
“We kept the ball too much for my taste today,” Ancelotti laughed at himself and the journalists. “Are you serious?” the reporter replied. “No, ” added the Real Madrid coach, laughing.
And what was he referring to? Barcelona representatives, led by coach Xavi and defender Pique, complained after the semifinal that Real Madrid relied only on breakaway situations.
“They only won the game on breakaways. We kept the ball much more,” Piqué lamented. “We were better than Real Madrid. We are angry and disappointed. We controlled Real Madrid, who just waited in their own penalty area,” added coach Xavi.
“Barcelona didn’t dominate against us. We just went deeper to enjoy the breakaway situations we had plenty of space for. We tried two different styles in the match. The block may not be aesthetic, but when it works for us…,” Ancelotti countered after the semi-final.
However, as you can see, he makes nothing of the Catalans’ cries and can even make fun of them. Well, as long as he keeps winning trophies, any critical talk can let him sleep in peace.
