Real Madrid is preparing a new stadium, which will be completely finished in December, but it has already shown one feature in advance. A retractable turf in the ground.
Yes, even Real Madrid can have turf problems, it’s not just the prerogative of smaller and poorer clubs. Los Blancos struggled a lot with the pitch last year, the turf was unable to take root and the club had to change it five times.
That’s what the club is trying to avoid at the new Santiago Bernabéu. They have come up with a clever innovation that will keep the turf in absolutely sensational condition.
The turf at the Santiago Bernabéu will be taken down to the bowels in six sections, where it will be lit only for matches. This will keep it in top condition.
The whole demodelling of the turf won’t take much time and it has other uses. In fact, Real Madrid plans to use the new stadium in a multifunctional way.
This means that it will host NBA, NFL, tennis matches or various concerts. And thanks to the retractable turf, the new stage will be ready to be stomped on and the turf won’t even get damaged.
Florentino Pérez wanted the new Santiago Bernabéu to earn its own money, so there shouldn’t be a shopping mall with luxury brand stores or Michelin-starred restaurants inside the stadium.
At the same time, the stand behind the south goal, the Fondo Sur, where the Real Madrid fans’ cauldron is located, will be movable and easy to “remove”. The official opening of the complete stadium should be in December and will cost Real around 900 million euros.
